“Windows to the Past”

In 1978, John W. Huelskamp, our founder/historian, purchased his first Civil War collectable firearm, a COLT M1851 Navy, while on a vacation trip to historic Connecticut. After arriving home, he disassembled the piece with great care noticing a small scrap of paper with a beautifully scripted signature tucked away between the backstrap and the walnut grip.

He realized instantly that this little piece of paper had a big purpose!

It was most likely placed in this secure spot to provide proof of ownership should this highly-desirable Colt find its way into someone else’s hands. After a professional appraisal was conducted, it was determined that the scrap of paper, inscription, and revolver all dated back to Civil War times!

This then began a journey of discovery for the Old Colt…

In an effort to make this unique piece of history “talk”, Mr. Huelskamp began contacting noted historians and gun experts across America. During these discussions, it became evident that there were no information hubs that provided reliable research on Civil War Weapon ownership. In fact, it was learned that most historical documents and ordnance records relating to ownership by soldiers were scattered in thousands of locations across America. These sites exist today and include county and state historical libraries and museums, state archives, special collections, and the Federal archives.

Despite the obstacles along the way, Mr. Huelskamp managed to complete the story of the Old Colt. He was thrilled to discover that it was carried by a New York Cavalry trooper at the Battle of Antietam! This success consequently lead to more journeys of discovery…and to the beginnings of CIVIL WAR WEAPONS SEARCH!

Now, after 22 years of research, information gathering, and computer compilation, CIVIL WAR WEAPONS SEARCH has emerged as a premiere research center whose purpose is to help new and veteran historians with Civil War Weapons identification, history and ownership.

We are proud to be part of the growing number of Civil War enthusiasts who believe that Civil War artifacts are important “windows to the past”. Because of this, we further believe that owners of Civil War artifacts should not only preserve and protect the history of Civil War weapons, but promote their histories in order to best serve present and future generations.

The Team at CIVIL WAR WEAPONS SEARCH is pleased that you have taken true custodian-ship of your Civil War weapon by researching its history. We are committed to helping you on your own journey of discovery…
